Yarn & Needles

The same yarn is used for all three versions (children, women, and men), while different needle sizes create variations in gauge and therefore in the overall look.
Children: 22 stitches wide and 30 rows high in stockinette stitch on US 4 (3.5 mm) needles = 4 × 4" (10 × 10 cm).
Women: 20 stitches wide and 26 rows high in stockinette stitch on US 7 (4.5 mm) needles = 4 × 4" (10 × 10 cm).
Men: 21 stitches wide and 28 rows high in stockinette stitch on US 6 (4 mm) needles = 4 × 4" (10 × 10 cm).
Choose a yarn with a gauge of approximately 20–22 stitches per 4". The pattern was developed using a DK/light worsted weight yarn (approximately 8-ply), but gauge is what matters most.
For example, you can use Drops Muskat, Drops Soft Tweed, Drops Cotton Merino, or Drops Belle, as well as many other yarns.
